Caterpillar Inc. (often shortened to CAT) is an American manufacturer of construction, mining, and engineering equipment. The company is the world's largest manufacturer of construction equipment, which includes military-adapted machinery such as the D9 armored bulldozer. Caterpillar D9 bulldozers played a significant role in the military ground operations in Gaza beginning in October 2023. Functioning as the lead vehicles for ground forces, they were used to clear routes, which resulted in extensive damage to roads, buildings, private property, and critical infrastructure—including the destruction of the Gaza courthouse and Palestine Square in Gaza City. These bulldozers are maintained in the field by specialized military mobile repair squads operating within the Gaza Strip. In March 2024, D9 bulldozers were utilized during military operations at the al-Shifa Hospital complex in Gaza City while patients and medical staff were still on the premises. The operations resulted in severe destruction to the hospital, including burned buildings that rendered the medical compound completely non-functional. Additionally, Caterpillar D9 bulldozers were deployed to carry out extensive destruction in Rafah, Beit Hanoun, and eastern Khan Younis. Widespread destruction continued within the "Yellow Line" areas both during the military operations and after the ceasefire established under the Trump Agreement. Israel has also utilized excavators from Caterpillar and other companies for widespread demolition operations across the Gaza Strip, southern Lebanon, and the West Bank. These activities are carried out through private contractors that partner with the Israeli military and receive payment for each home destroyed. Caterpillar’s official Israeli representative, Zoko Enterprises, serves as the exclusive supplier of Caterpillar heavy machinery to the Israeli military.
